About Catherine

Early Life

Catherine Patricia was born on October 29th, 1949 to Patrick & Josephine Tolan and big sister Emily.

Unfortunately, their mother passed away just three days after giving birth to Catherine. Their father Patrick lived with his sister Mary and husband Louis and raised Emily and Catherine until his death just 5 years later.

Emily and Catherine were blessed to have been adopted by their mother’s sister Lena and her husband Thomas. Lena and Thomas had 3 children of their own – Nancy, Isabelle and Peter.

The family lived on Smith Street in East Rockaway. She went to Rhame Avenue Elementary School and graduated from East Rockaway High School in 1967.

Married Life

Cathy and Eddie started dating when they met at Emily’s wedding. They were married in 1971. After six years of marriage, they had two children very close in age – Kevin and Kelly. And 8 years later they were blessed with the now 6′ 1″ “baby” Kris.

The Motts lived in Baldwin on Prince Street for 20 years. Catherine joined the PTA and was a member of the Brookside PTA Bowling League. She also was part of the early neighborhood “sewing club” which included many neighbors and PTA members. She was always willing to have company or house guests. She loved having people over.

In 1999, Catherine and Eddie moved to East Rockaway to be closer to family and friends that they grew up with.

Catherine’s passion was her family… When Kris was on the football team, she could be found on the bleachers. When Samir played soccer, she would brave the cold to cheer him on.

As their kids got older, she and Eddie enjoyed going to Mets games and to the movies. They took cruises to both the Panama Canal and Alaska. Every Christmas she took Kelly and her daughter-in-laws Amanda and Rachel to a Broadway show and spent the day with them in the city. And when nothing was happening, she could be found chatting on the phone or having tea with Emily.

Work Life

Over the years, Catherine worked in a variety of places. From medical work to working for the Nassau County Office of Assessment to becoming the Secretary to the Receiver of Taxes, she touched the lives of many coworkers who also became her close friends.
